Long distance swimming popular
In our country, long distance swimming is very popular because of the many lakes, rivers and coastlines that we have. Events such as the IJsselmeer Swimming Marathon attract many participants every year. This form of swimming requires perseverance, but the reward is great. Swimming over a long distance offers a wonderful combination of effort, mental discipline and the beauty of nature. This makes this sport a great experience!
Nature
One of the most enjoyable aspects of long distance swimming is the connection with nature. As a swimmer, you have to deal with wind, waves, currents and changing water temperatures. These unpredictable factors make long distance swimming an adventurous and challenging sport. Every time you do it, it is different, because the environment is constantly changing. For many swimmers, this form is really addictive!
tax
Physically, long distance swimming is demanding. You need to have stamina so that you can save energy over a long distance. After all, your body is put under considerable strain by the continuous movement of your arms and legs, while at the same time your breathing needs to be optimal.
Alexander technique
Swim in Balance® specializes in teaching you a way of long-distance swimming that you can maintain for a long time without getting too tired, and that is healthier for your neck, back and shoulders. The lessons are offered based on the Alexander Technique. This technique ensures less strain on your muscles and joints, which makes swimming more efficient, you can maintain it for a long time and you will enjoy it more. The goal is that you will be refreshed and more energetic afterwards, instead of exhausted and worn out.
Less instead of more
At most gyms, you work on your fitness and health by always doing more. 'Which muscles are too weak?' 'Which muscles need to be strengthened?' And so on. At Swim in Balance®, however, the focus is on what you could do less of. Which movement is unnecessary? At what moments can you let go of your muscles, instead of tensing them all the time? A balance ('in Balance') is sought between effort and relaxation, with a preference for the latter.
Long-term use
This approach is best suited to sports that you want to be able to use for a long time; better than sprinting, for example. It is best suited to swimming, because water seems to cooperate completely with these principles. With this basis, swimming becomes much lighter, easier and more fun. This results in you being able to maintain a stroke for much longer and the quality of the movement increases. The stroke becomes more efficient.
From music to swimming
Swim in Balance® was founded in 2015 by two professional musicians, both of whom are also Alexander Technique teachers: Hylke Rozema (horn player) and Esther Visser (violinist). During their training as Alexander Technique teachers, they became interested in the combination with swimming. They were the first from the Netherlands to follow a training in England and introduced this approach in the Netherlands. The company has been led by Esther since 2017.
Courses
The Swim in Balance® method has changed considerably and has been supplemented with her own insights. Esther trains teachers to become Swim in Balance® instructors herself and has gathered an enthusiastic and skilled team of teachers around her.
