Effortless and healthy swimming and running

Swim in Balance regularly organizes special 'Swimrun workshops', where you will receive tips on an effortless and healthy way of swimming (specifically crawl) and running in one day: both based on the same principles from the Alexander Technique.

As you know, the swimming courses at Swim in Balance are based on the Alexander Technique anyway. Especially for this day we work together with Gilles Rullmann, an Alexander Technique teacher who specializes in running, see his running page. The whole day takes place in the Kennemer Duinen near Haarlem, at the dune lake 't Wed (and the surrounding paths).

Het hardlopen vormt een prachtige aanvulling. Je leert op een ‘slimmere’ manier bewegen, waardoor het hardlopen lichter en langer vol te houden wordt. Ideaal als je traint voor een triathlon of geïnteresseerd bent om dezelfde principes uit de zwemles ook op hardlopen toe te passen!

The day lasts from 10.00 a.m. to 17.00 p.m. and consists of two parts: 3 hours running workshop / lunch / 3 hours swimming workshop (or vice versa: depending on which group you are in). With a drink after, for whoever wants. You don't need to be in very good shape, we mainly work on technique by swimming / running small pieces, theory and video analysis. You collect valuable knowledge and skills, which you can use to work on your fitness later on.

Group 1: for people who have not yet followed a crawl course at Swim in Balance
Group 2: for people who have already followed the basic crawl course at Swim in Balance
Maximum 8 participants per group.

The aim of this workshop is to teach you step by step a healthy and effective way of swimming/running, so that you can fully reap the benefits afterwards. This style of swimming/running promotes mobility of the neck, shoulders, spine, hips, knees and ankles. There is less pressure on the joints and you learn to move more smoothly. This prevents injuries, you get better results and you have more fun in both swimming and running.

At the end of this course we have worked on:

  • a nice alignment of your head-neck-back while swimming/running
  • good timing for the arm and leg movement
  • coordinating a relaxed breathing pattern
  • finding the optimal power effort

it is a great opportunity to take a break in September in a Mediterranean climate (similar to Italy) and to follow two (!) Swim in Balance courses in one week.

Test students wanted refresher workshop

In the photo above (right) you can see Trijntje, just after she signed her agreement with Swim in Balance. She is training to be a new Swim in Balance teacher. Besides that she moves very nicely in the water, she works as a nurse in the heart department of the AMC and has sailed at a high level (World Cup). Recently she has practiced hard to master all the didactic elements as we use them in our method and she only needs to practice teaching groups.

The new season started yesterday with the open water courses, it was wonderful. The courses in the pool will start again in the coming weeks. We have also organized two extra day workshops, the practice hours are now online and for those who want I have two free tickets for a concert where I (Esther) perform.

Special compact offer in December

Last weekend we had a crawl workshop in Driebergen, it was wonderful! The workshop was fully booked, our student teachers assisted very well and we received enthusiastic reactions from the participants. We will do that more often! Next month we will offer a kind of intermediate form between workshops and courses, I will explain it below.

12 volunteers wanted as trial student

Over the next two weekends, our 4 trainees (Esther, Lydia, Olga and Tyrone) will receive the last part of their training, before starting as teachers at Swim in Balance in January. They practice teaching groups and they will take a practical exam on December 19.
